Mahindra & Mahindra is collaborating with ABB Robotics to implement PixelPaint technology in its new range of electric vehicles. This innovative system ensures precise paint application with minimal waste; a key step in automotive customization and efficiency for the Indian market.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), India’s leading SUV manufacturer, has selected ABB Robotics’ innovative PixelPaint technology for its new electric vehicle (EV) painting plant. The inkjet-inspired technology is expected to go into mass production in 2025, making M&M the first OEM in India to adopt the technology for painting roofs and side pillars.ABB’s PixelPaint technology is known for its ability to apply large areas of uniform color and intricate details with high levels of precision.“Our revolutionary PixelPaint technology can apply large areas of uniform color and even the smallest details with total precision, without delaying the production line or requiring manual intervention,” said Joerg Reger, General Manager of ABB’s Automotive Robotics Division. The system’s automated process will enable Mahindra’s paint shop to apply finishes such as contrasting roof and side pillar treatments seamlessly.PixelPaint operates with a paint head with over 1000 individually controlled nozzles mounted on an ABB painting robot from the IRB 5500 series. This system is also complemented by ABB’s 3D vision system and coordinated by RobotStudio planning and programming software. Theintegration ensures 100% paint application without overspray or air mist, eliminating time-consuming masking and repeated passes through the paint, resulting in minimal loss and accurate reproduction of details. The growing demand for customization in the automotive industry makes PixelPaint an exemplary technology, contributing to Mahindra’s positioning in the luxury segments. The deployment includes 42 robots from the IRB 5500 family, further consolidating M&M as a leader in advanced automotive manufacturing in India.PixelPaint’s precision should enable complex operations such as interior painting and Independent waterproofing. This eliminates the need for manual masking, saving time and materials. In addition, ABB’s digitally controlled RB1000i ink atomizers improve transfer efficiency by 10% and reduce waste by more than 30%, ensuring minimal ink loss. This placement builds on the existing relationship between ABB and Mahindra & Mahindra, underscoring their commitment to innovation and sustainability in automotive manufacturing. While As ABB’s transformative technologies continue to support industry evolution, Mahindra & Mahindra’s new range of electric vehicles will benefit from improved quality and efficiency and the ability to offer customized options to its customers.
